Lodox Statscan evaluated

In a review paper that was published recently in the Turkish Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery 2009;15(6):521-528, Dr Bardia Amirlak and his colleagues, describes their findings on evaluating the Lodox Statscan system at the Creighton University Medical Center, Omaha, Nebraska. The work was focussed on the ability of Statscan to improve the outcomes for emergency patients

In the paper some illuminating case studies are described. For example, Statscan revealed a widened mediastinum on a 76 year old patient which was not seen on the conventional radiograph, hence an exploratory laparotomy and thoracotomy revealed a diaphragmatic injury and right ventricular rupture. In another case, a bullet fragment well removed from the site of the main injury was located by Statscan. This resulted in a careful examination of the rectum to reveal a small perforation necessitating colostomy placement.

The team concludes: “at Creighton University Medical Center, the Lodox®’s Statscan® has been beneficial in expediting the radiological processes in the ‘golden hour’ of trauma patients. This full-body digital radiography system has proven to be not only faster, but potentially safer, more user-friendly, and to have a greater ease of image transmissibility than conventional techniques. All of these factors show promise to reduce morbidity and mortality in trauma patients, encouraging further use at trauma centers worldwide. As with the introduction of any novel medical technology, new trauma protocols that spring from
this system warrant detailed investigations in the future”.
