Statscan arteriograms. Prof Andrew Nicol, Head of the Trauma Unit at Cape Town’s renowned Groote Schuur Hospital, pioneered using Statscan for “Emergency Room Arteriography”
The C-arm is positioned just above the hip. Contrast material is injected into the common femoral artery, the rapid injection starting just before the X-ray beam scans in the direct from the hip towards the feet. The scan speed of the C-arm is similar to the flow rate so detailed long leg views are produced.
This technique was again made evident recently. Firstly, Prof Boffard, the Head of Surgery at the Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital in Johannesburg chose to feature this capability in a recent TV broadcast. At a brand new installation, Dr Darryl Wood had the need to perform an emergency room arteriogram on a gunshot victim which was one of the first patients reporting to the system. He was very pleased with the resulting image.
Lodox invites debate on the value of this unique capability of Statscan. Specifically, under which conditions, will it be most useful?
